Coming up SOON! Turtle River Stewardship Program January 29th in Mercer

You are personally invited to an important conference on the creation of the Turtle River Stewardship Program on Wednesday, January 29th at the Great Northern Motel banquet facility in Mercer, WI. The conference is co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Iron County Lakes and Rivers Alliance.

For several years both the WDNR and ICLRA have been considering the concept of waters management on the scale of a watershed – lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands as well as the surrounding terrestrial surfaces. For the past three months the staffs of the DNR and ICLRA have been negotiating a workable solution to upscaling of the lake management plan grant system to include a whole watershed. The features, benefits, and advantages of that upscaling will be discussed. Please attend to “put in your 2 cents worth”.

George Meyer, President, Wisconsin Wildlife Foundation

The conference will begin at 11:00 am with a welcome by Dave Hall, ICLRA president, followed by a keynote presentation on the Wisconsin Public Trust Doctrine by former Wisconsin DNR secretary and current WWF president, George Meyer. A buffet lunch will be served followed by presentations on lake and watershed grant opportunities by senior DNR staff. The event will conclude with an open panel discussion of the contents and functions of a watershed management (stewardship) plan.

We’re really sorry for the short notice, but please RSVP by the end of Tuesday, January 21st to rthiede1@gmail.com. There is NO COST to attendees. Registration begins at 10:30 am.

TFSWA has a new property manager.

The Bureau of Parks and Recreation Management has appointed Beth Feind the new Property Manager at the Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area. She will begin work at the flowage on Monday November 11th. Beth is currently a Ranger at the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest, and before that she worked at the DNR Service Center in Woodruff. I have known Beth for several years and think she will do a fantastic job as the new manager. I will stay on for a while to help her get settled in and bring her up to speed on current issues at the flowage. I also anticipate that Beth will reach out to many of you individually so you can get to know her better. In the meantime if you have any questions please let me know.

Proposal to permit ATVs on all Iron County roads

At the last Iron County Highway Committee meeting a motion was made to allow ATVs on all Iron County roads.  Some county officials have expressed concern about safety considerations including the danger to bicyclists and motorcyclists with stone on the roads among other things.

The motion will be considered at this Tuesday’s (6/18) meeting at 4:00 PM at the forestry building in Hurley.  If you can’t attend, you may  call committee chair Jim Kichak at 715 562-0634 to express your opinion.
