Update on Matching Grant for Curly Leaf Pondweed support: Randy Payne reported that the $10,000 matching grant has been rescinded and the donor has written a check for that amount to support Rice Lake. How can we best support the cause with the money that we have allocated? There is a thought that our best spend may be to hire a two person crew for 80 hours at $30 per hour to focus on the South Bay of Rice Lake. The crew can be hired through the North Lakeland Discovery Center; they are college students, working for the summer and they have the boats and equipment to do the work.
We currently have volunteers to do the Turtle River and Pike Lake
How would a seining net work if it was strung across the river to catch the turions? Turions are floating down to us, and what if we extend a net across the river to capture the turions. Randy has heard that Pike Lake has a net and will check into using it. What about using a fyke net…is that possible and would it work to capture turions? We might be able to borrow some nets from the DNR?
If we hire to have the South Bay pulled, what is our responsibility to get permission to do the weed pull?
Motion: To appropriate $2,500 to the Invasive Species Committee to investigate and sponsor a removal program. Randy P is authorized to move forward with the North Lakeland Discovery Center on the removal of Curly Leaf Pondweed, under the guidance of Zach Wilson with Iron County Conservation Department.
Motion Accepted. Great work Randy!
